What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disease that affects the muscles – most commonly, the eyes, facial expressions, arms, hands, and legs. It can also cause difficulty breathing, swallowing, chewing, and talking. It is often referred to as MG.

When a person has MG, there is a disruption to the body's voluntary muscles (those that we control). Our nerves communicate with our muscles, and when the nerve impulses meet the nerve ending, a neurotransmitter called Acetylcholine releases, and binds itself to acetylcholine receptors thus allowing the muscles to contract. In MG, the immune system abnormally produces antibodies – molecules that block or damage some of the receptor sites for acetylcholine on muscles-. Because of this damage or block of the receptors, the affected muscles get fewer nerve signals and are unable to sustain a full contraction.

Myasthenia Gravis can occur in anyone, across all ages, genders, races, and ethnic groups. The condition is not contagious.

There are many types of medications and treatments available to help people living with MG. While there is no cure, effective treatment planning and therapies can make living with MG much easier.
