What is it?

Ocular Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic disorder that affects muscle movement around the eye and eyelids. Some of the common symptoms you might experience include double vision or drooping in one or both eyelids – known as Ptosis. You may also find you have trouble focusing your vision. Like other types of MG, Ocular MG occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks muscle cell receptors, causing muscle weakness. There are a number of explanations as to why the eye muscles are affected. As eye muscles are very different from those in the limbs, they contract more and therefore tire more quickly. Another possibility is that eye muscles may respond differently to the body’s immune response.

Studies show that if you have been experiencing symptoms of Ocular Myasthenia Gravis for two to three years, you are less likely to develop weakness elsewhere.
